I heart the Farmer’s Market
May 20, 2008
This was the first opportunity we’ve had to make it to the Olympia Farmer’s market this year. I bought some flowers for my yard and veggies for my garden. I hope this summer I can actually keep my flowers alive and help my veggies grow. Every other summer I’ve been working full time and I haven’t given them the attention they deserve.
We will go to the Farmer’s Market weekly from here on out because we get a Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) box each week. Basically you prepay a local farm for a “share” of produce. Over the summer/fall you get a basket full of veggies and fruit each week. This will be the third year that we’ve done this and it’s one of the highlights of our summer. We purchase our CSA box from Kirsop Farms, a local family-run organic farm growing organic produce. If you have the opportunity to support a local farm through a CSA program, you should! It encourages us to eat lots of veggies, try new local varieties, it makes local and organic produce affordable, your produce is always super fresh (picked the same day or day before) and, I think, best of all – it keeps the local family farms in business and your money “stays” in your community.

Liam stuffs a flower bud into his hand for safe keeping. Notice his shorts – it’s the first time he’s worn them this summer. Also – note his flip-flops, which are completely NOT practical for a 10-month old.

Pretty purple flowers, which I ended up buying. I couldn’t resist.

I love taking photos of produce and flowers. Don’t they look so beautiful?

Fresh Walla Walla Asparagus. The sign says “This is the dawning of the age of asparagus,” it’s a farmer after my own heart.

If I was a bumper-sticker kind of gal, I would put this one on my car. This was up behind the booth selling fresh Alaskan salmon. Yum!

Liam plays with flowers planted outside the Farmer’s Market. Looks innocent enough, but you’ve got to keep an eye on him. He’ll pretend like he is just playing with them and before you know it, he’s grabs a handful and heads for his mouth!

This is the community fountain that is in downtown Olympia. The temperatures were in the high 80s this day and you can tell that people are taking advantage of the nice warm weather. I couldn’t tell if there were more adults or children running through the fountain. I can’t wait until Liam is walking and able to run though the fountain – hopefully by the end of the summer!
Look forward to going to the Farmer’s Market with you all sometime this summer.
